Let’s be honest – you’re here to swim and soak up the sun. Grab your beach towel and check out our definitive list of must-see beaches near Puerto Viejo. You’ll be bronzed and salty before you know it!
Cocles and Punta Cocles
One of the most popular beaches in the area, Cocles is great for walking, swimming, surfing, and sunbathing. To the southeast you will find the secluded shores of Punta Cocles, where the coral reef pools offer gentle bathing and swimming options. A lifeguard is on duty on the northwest area of the beach, but we recommend that you use caution when swimming – there can be dangerous riptides in this area.
South of Cocles, this quaint little “suburb” of Puerto Viejo offers small secluded beaches, coral reefs and delicious restaurants and cafés. The main beach access is just after Shawanda resort on the left hand side of the road, marked by a little wooden gate with a roof and a post that prohibits motorized vehicles. Because it’s pedestrian-only, Playa Chiquita is a nice option on crowded weekends or holidays.
Punta Uva and Arrecife
We don’t like to pick favorites, but…shhh! – this is our favorite beach. The rock outcropping called Punta Uva (or grape point in English) separates Punta Uva Beach to the north and Arrecife (reef) to the south. These narrow palm-fringed beaches are excellent for snorkelers; there’s a beautiful reef offshore with plenty of vibrant underwater entertainment! We recommend that you take the second entrance to the left with a sign that says “Arrecife,” then follow the coast to the south until you find your slice of paradise.
Note: This beach can get busy with cars and out-of-towners during weekends and holidays. If you’d like a little privacy, head to Playa Chiquita.
