Providing unbeatable education is one Costa Rica’s highest priorities, and it’s our goal to foster a community of progressive, free-thinking individuals. Education in Puerto Viejo, however, is vastly different than what you’ll find in some of Costa Rica’s larger cities. In fact, our options for alternative education, homeschooling and even unschooling are competitive with the likes of Montessori, Waldorf and Rudolf Steiner – but for a tiny fraction of the cost.
Rather than placing an emphasis on creating students that share the same thoughts and beliefs, alternative education programs in Costa Rica focus on giving students the tools to collaborate with peers and educators from all over the world. Most students enjoy walking or biking to/from school, spend a large portion of their day outdoors and are given ample free time to explore their learning environment on their own terms. Meditation, art, music, and other forms of creative therapy are at the forefront of encouraging students to flourish autonomously, and students are nurtured as individuals.
By creating a welcoming and open environment for all students – local and foreign – Costa Rican schools have become trendsetters in the push for reimagined education. With a focus on diversity and inclusivity, parents from a wide variety of backgrounds are working together to ensure that their children are given the chance to step into adulthood with the knowledge they need to succeed. A combination of homeschooling and unschooling, progressive education options in Costa Rica don’t just teach students how to think, they teach students how to think for themselves.
